* Palm Sunday ServicesPalm Sunday Services

Time: 8:00 AM

This service marks the beginning of Holy Week. The service starts in the Huiginn Hall with the reading of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The congregation, carrying palm fronds, processes into the church singing “All Glory Laud and Honor.” Once in the church the mood changes. The passion gospel is read in parts by various readers with the part of the murderous crowd voiced by the congregation. The service ends on a solemn note as we enter Holy Week and await Easter Sunday the following week.

* Holy Week-TenebraeHoly Week-Tenebrae

Time: 7:30 PM

The name Tenebrae is from the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows.” The service symbolizes the growing darkness as we move toward Good Friday and the return of the light at Easter. The liturgy is characterized by the gradual extinguishing of candles and other lights until only a single candle, considered a symbol of our Lord remains. Toward the end of the service this candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil. At the very end, a loud noise is made, symbolizing the earthquake at the time of the resurrection (Matthew 28:2), the candle is restored to its place, and by its light all depart in silence.

* Holy Week-Maundy ThursdayHoly Week-Maundy Thursday

Time: 7:30 PM

Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper when Jesus shared the Passover meal with his disciples on the night before he was crucified. At the end of the liturgy, the altar is stripped and all decorations are veiled or removed from the church to represent the arrest of Jesus and the beginning of his trial, Passion, death and resurrection. This is a powerful moment, and it ends with all leaving the church in silence. In contrast to joyful Easter celebrations when we worship the resurrected Savior, Maundy Thursday services are typically more solemn occasions, marked by the shadow of Jesus' betrayal.

* Good Friday Way of the CrossGood Friday Way of the Cross

Time: 12:00 PM

“Way of the Cross”- Way of the Cross (or Stations of the Cross) refers to the depiction of the final hours (or Passion) of Jesus, and the devotion commemorating the Passion. Guided by illustrations, the service leads you through the 14 stations, or places of Jesus’ agony. St. Peter’s is blessed to have the traditional 14 stations depicted in beautiful illustration that are found below the windows in the church. Each of these illustrations becomes the focus of one of the service meditations.
